Lot description:
Roman Provincial

SYRIA, Decapolis. Nysa-Scythopolis(?). Commodus. AD 177-192. Æ 17mm (4.10 g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Apollo(?) standing facing, head left, holding labrys and branch. Barkay -; Spijkerman -; Rosenberger -; SNG ANS -. Near VF, earthen black patina. Apparently unrecorded.

The fabric and style of this coin is unlike that found on coins from Nysa in Lydia and similar to that found on the coins of Nysa-Sythopolis, yet the reverse type seems to be unknown on coins from the latter. Barkay illustrates one coin of Commodus with a very similar portrait style (cf. Barkay 30).

Estimate: $100
